A comprehensive overview of Alexander Scriabin (1872–1915): his life, character, musical influences, and works. Scriabin, a complex figure characterized as a genius, mystic, and megalomaniac, showed exceptional musical talent from an early age, particularly in piano. Influenced by Chopin and the mysticism of his time, he developed a unique and modern harmonic language in his compositions. Excerpts from some of his compositions are played during the lecture, such as the “Black Mass Sonata,” “The Insect Sonata,” and “Vers la Flamme.”
Patrick Bade
Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.
