Gershwin: An American Genius
Summary
The tragically short-lived George Gershwin (1898-1937), the man who “made an honest woman of jazz” was arguably the greatest musical genius to be born in North America. Like other musical prodigies who failed to make the age of 40, such as Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Bizet, the music seemed to pour out of him with God-given inspiration. We celebrate the music he gave us much as we mourn what he might have gone on to give us.
Patrick Bade
Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.
Well, I think it was through, I think it was a lot of sympathy amongst liberal minded East Coast Jews for civil right movement and for Blacks in general. So, I’m sure he, he shared in that, but I think it was particularly that play that attracted him.
