The Beilis and Frank Trials in 1913: Two Blood Libel Trials in America and Russia, Different Endings

Tuesday 12.07.2022

Summary

The lecture juxtaposes two infamous trials: the Beilis case in Russia and the trial of Leo Frank in the Southern US. The Beilis case focuses on the false accusations of ritual murder against Mendel Beilis, a Jewish man, following the death of a Russian boy named Andrei Yushchinsky in 1911. Leo Frank, a German Jew, managed a pencil factory in Atlanta and was falsely accused of murdering Mary Phagan, a young girl who worked at the factory. The lecture reflects on the tragic miscarriage of justice in both cases and the enduring legacy of intolerance and bigotry.
