The Fall of Paris and the Rise of New York
Summary
When Paris fell to the Nazis in June 1940, American critic Harold Rosenberg lamented that, “the laboratory of the 20th century had been shut down.” He could have added that a new laboratory opened up in New York. Many of the artists and intellectuals who contributed to the glory of Paris arrived in New York as refugees, kick-starting a golden age of culture in the city.
