George Antheil: The Bad Boy of Hollywood Music

Sunday 10.03.2024

Summary

The self-proclaimed ‘bad boy of music’ George Antheil ultimately failed to fulfill his early promise as a leader of the musical avant-garde. Nevertheless, he had a fascinating career as a composer of symphonies, film scores and musicals and still found time to develop epoch-making technology with his friend, the glamorous film star Hedy Lamarr.

Yes, he was in the First World War actually. He was briefly in the American forces at the end of the First World War, but I think too old by the Second World War, whereas his younger brother did join up and was killed.
