Patrick Bade
Marilyn Horne and Jessye Norman
Summary
This lecture traces the careers of two of the greatest singers of the twentieth century, Marilyn Horne and Jessye Norman. Excelling in an extraordinarily wide-ranging repertoire, Marilyn Horne played a significant role in revitalizing interest in bel canto operas. By recovering vocal skills that had gradually declined over the twentieth century, she set a standard that modern singers aspire to achieve. Jessye Norman’s sumptuous voice was marked by her exceptional intelligence and musicality.
