Foundation Course: The Jews and the Crisis of Modernity: Part 1
Summary
From Ghetto to emancipation and the redefining of Jewish identity.
Over the past 200 years, the Jewish world has undergone profound transformations. This short, overview course explores the complex journey of the Jewish people from the era of Enlightenment, which introduced ideas of emancipation, liberalism, and tolerance, to the present day, where those very forces have, in some cases, turned against them.
We will delve into the effects of Jewish emancipation, the evolving challenges to Jewish identity, and the rise of modern antisemitism. We will also examine the emergence of Zionism, the devastating impact of the Shoah, and the creation of the State of Israel. Beyond the Jewish experience, we will consider how these events have shaped global history and influenced the wider world.
