Heroes and Villains of the United States: George Washington and Aaron Burr
Summary
Everyone, whether American or not, recognises George Washington (1732–1799) as a great hero. In this presentation we shall delve a little deeper to see whether after all these centuries his hero status remains unblemished. We shall also explore the historical record of Aaron Burr (1756–1836), who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel and went politically “mad,” planning a siege of territory in the southern US, including parts of Mexico, to proclaim himself emperor.
William Tyler
William Tyler has spent his entire professional life in adult education, beginning at Kingsgate College in 1969. He has lectured widely for many public bodies, including the University of Cambridge and the WEA, in addition to speaking to many clubs and societies. In 2009, William was awarded the MBE for services to adult education, and he has previously been a scholar in residence at the London Jewish Cultural Centre.
