Summary
The Musee d'Orsay is the world’s greatest collection of early modern art, covering 1848 to 1914. The collection comprises painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and design. Since the museum opened in 1986 vast sums of money have been invested to ensure that the museum displays not only French art but the art of every Western nation. In the first of four talks devoted to this extraordinary museum, we shall explore the creation of the museum in a former railway station and look at the at the work of realists like Gustave Courbet and Jean-Francois Millet and academic artists such as Thomas Couture, William Bouguereau, and Alexandre Cabanel. Patrick Bade
Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.
