Patrick Bade
Giacomo Meyerbeer and French Grand Opera

Wednesday 7.12.2022

Summary

Patrick Bade discusses the life and work of Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791–1864), a German opera composer considered one of the most frequently performed composers of the nineteenth century. Meyerbeer’s grand opera style was achieved by his merging of German orchestra style with Italian vocal tradition. This set a standard which helped to maintain Paris as the opera capital of the nineteenth century.
