A Fascinating Life: A Conversation on Leslie Howard
Summary
Leslie Howard the son of a Hungarian Jew, spent much of his acting life portraying the quintessential Englishman. The star of both the stage and screen, he is most famous as Ashley in Gone with the Wind. This presentation will examine his career and then Lady Aurelia Young will discuss his relationship with both her father, the sculptor, Oscar Nemon and Leslie Howard’s great love Violet Cunningham. We will conclude with his untimely and mysterious death when his plane was shot down by German bombers.
Trudy Gold
Trudy Gold was the CEO of the London Jewish Cultural Centre and a founding member of the British delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). Throughout her career she taught modern Jewish history at schools, universities, and to adult groups and ran seminars on Holocaust education in the UK, Eastern Europe, and China. She also led Jewish educational tours all over the world. Trudy was the educational director of the student resources “Understanding the Holocaust” and “Holocaust Explained” and the author of The Timechart History of Jewish Civilization.
Lady Aurelia Young
Aurelia Young is the author of Finding Nemon: The Extraordinary Life of the Outsider Who Sculpted the Famous (2019), the first biography of her father, the renowned sculptor Oscar Nemon. She grew up wandering in and out of her father’s studios at the family home in Oxford and later in London. Since his death in 1985, she has been researching her father’s life and gives talks about his life and work in the US, Paris, Brussels, Israel, and across the UK. She married George Young in 1964, an MP for forty-one years and now Lord Young of Cookham.
