Monday 31.07.2023

Summary

The Mitford family consists of the six daughters and one son of Baron Redesdale who can trace their ancestry back to the Norman Conquest.

They were described in the Times as: “Diana the Fascist, Jessica the Communist, Unity the Hitler lover, Nancy the Novelist, Deborah the Duchess and Pamela the unobtrusive poultry connoisseur“. The son died in the second World War. These two sessions will tell their story against the backdrop of the tumultuous times in which they lived. Part 1 of 2.

You’ve got to remember, you have two extremes here. You have Jessica who was a communist, and she runs off with her cousin Romilly who, very, very left wing, and Deborah, beg your pardon. Diana and Unity were fascists. In the end, they broke the family. Deborah tried to keep the peace, but the family was broken, and Jessica and Diana were never reconciled.
