Patrick Bade
Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.
No, they were made by casting. You can’t, well actually that’s not true ‘cause in Germany, they carved medals out of wood. But in Italy they are cast. Style of the clothes worn by Pontius Pilate. I think probably, like Mantegna, that Piero had done a bit of homework to try and find clothing that he thought was correctly classical.
You have to ask Trudy that. I mean, it’s possible, but I don’t know that for sure. I mean The Borgias of course, an important family who are partly Jewish ancestry.
