Trudy Gold
Meyer Amschel Rothschild: The Beginnings

Thursday 23.02.2023

Summary

The name Rothschild evokes an extraordinary response that has made the family legendary, either for good or bad. It is the story of incredible achievement, against all the odds. To the antisemites, the Rothschilds are at the centre of a world Jewish conspiracy. This session will examine the beginnings of the dynasty in the Frankfurt ghetto, and the incredible resilience of the founder with his five brilliant sons.

Trudy Gold was the CEO of the London Jewish Cultural Centre and a founding member of the British delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). Throughout her career she taught modern Jewish history at schools, universities, and to adult groups and ran seminars on Holocaust education in the UK, Eastern Europe, and China. She also led Jewish educational tours all over the world. Trudy was the educational director of the student resources “Understanding the Holocaust” and “Holocaust Explained” and the author of The Timechart History of Jewish Civilization.

That is a very, very good question. I, actually, in my very strange, strange career, I used to teach Jewish history as a Sixth Form option at Eaton. And Nathan Rothschild was one of my students. He was not Halachically Jewish. But he said to me, “One day, I will have to address the community.” After all, the Balfour Declaration was, really, was given to Lord Rothschild. And he said, “I must study.” And of course, he took an AO level in modern Jewish history. And being a Rothschild, he got an A. So that’s a long convoluted question with, and I’m not going to give you a glib answer. I’m going to wait for the archivist. Yes.

Yes, they did.
